Men guilty of terror plot

Islamic extremist Abdulla Ahmed Ali has been found guilty of conspiring to kill hundreds of people in a terrorist bombing campaign.

The 27-year-old was the leader of an east London al Qaeda-inspired cell, a jury at Woolwich Crown Court found.

He planned to detonate homemade liquid bombs in attacks on targets including Heathrow. Two other men were also found guilty of conspiracy to murder.

Unions to protest over pay

The Government has come under fire from union leaders as a programme of action and demonstrations was agreed over plans to limit public sector pay.

Anger surfaced at the TUC conference in Brighton, where delegates criticised the Government's policy of trying to limit public sector pay rises to 2%.

The conference agreed to organise days of action against the policy, including a national demonstration.

'Greedy' energy firms slammed

The Unite union has compiled a "dossier of disgrace" showing the "greed" of energy firms as part of a campaign for a windfall tax on company profits.

It said profits have increased by 538% to £3bn since 2003, and prices have risen by up to 35% this year alone.

The figures follow claims from the National Housing Federation that by the end of 2009, 5.7 million households will be in fuel poverty.

Britain can do well - PM

Gordon Brown has insisted that Britain could do "well indeed" out of the present challenges facing the country.

Speaking in Birmingham as the Cabinet meets for the first time outside London since 1921, the PM said the current period is one of "astonishing change".

Mr Brown said: "We can do well indeed, but we have got to work out how we can make our way in what is a new world of new change that is hitting all of us."

Miliband backing Brown

Foreign Secretary David Miliband has pledged his backing for Gordon Brown -but also suggested the Prime Minister has failed to perform up to now.

Mr Miliband said the PM is displaying "more vigour and determination" than before, and would "prove people wrong" by winning the next General Election.

"He has enormous values, drive and vision and I think we are going to prove people wrong," he added.

UK finances 'a straitjacket'

The state of the economy will impose a "straitjacket" on an incoming Tory administration for years if the party wins the next election, it is claimed.

Shadow chancellor George Osborne said the "complete economic mess" left by Gordon Brown would "cast a long shadow" over British politics.

He also revealed he is conducting a review of his own economic plans in the light of the current downturn.

A computer failure at the London Stock Exchange has left City traders unable to cash in on a worldwide stock market boom for much of today.

A US government bail-out of mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac triggered early gains for the FTSE 100 Index but the problems arose at 9am.

The LSE restarted normal trading at 4pm before the 4.30pm close. It is the longest market stoppage since 2000.

Canal murders: man charged

A 43-year-old man has been charged with the murder of a man and woman on a stretch of the Grand Union Canal near Milton Keynes in Buckinghamshire.

The victims - a 53-year-old man and a 39-year-old woman - were pronounced dead after being found on the canal boat near picturesque Stoke Hammond.

William Cranston, of Stoke Hammond, has been remanded in custody and will face Aylesbury Magistrates' Court tomorrow.

EU monitors for Georgia

The Russian President has revealed that 200 EU monitors will be deployed to the breakaway Georgian province of South Ossetia no later than October 1.

Dmitry Medvedev pledged that Russia would withdraw its forces from Georgian territory after the monitors deploy.

His announcement comes after French President Nicolas Sarkozy pressed Moscow to honour its pledge to withdraw all its troops from Georgia.

Meehan 'had 100 porn images'

Police searching for Shannon Matthews found more than 100 indecent images of children on a computer belonging to her mother's former partner, a court heard.

Police seized Craig Meehan's PC from the home he shared with Karen Matthews the day after Shannon went missing in February, Dewsbury magistrates heard.

The 22-year-old, from Dewsbury Moor, denies 11 charges of possessing 134 indecent images of children.

Father tells of flood rescue

A father has described how he saved his daughter from near-certain death after she fell into a storm drain during the floods in the North East.

Mark Baxter, 34, a sergeant in the RAF, told how he jumped into the River Wear at Chester le Street to pluck three-year-old Leona to safety.

She was sucked 150ft through the storm-swollen drain into the river but recovered after being pulled out.

Storm warning for Florida

A tropical storm warning has been issued for the Florida Keys, which have been under an evacuation order ahead of the expected arrival of Hurricane Ike.

Weakening to a Category 2 storm as it crossed Cuba, where 900,000 people were evacuated, Ike will skirt Key West as it heads towards the Gulf of Mexico.

The storm is forecast to make landfall between Florida and Texas, with New Orleans under threat once again.

Last orders as more pubs shut

British pubs have closed at the rate of five a day during the first half of this year, according to new figures.

Closures have accelerated to 36 a week, up 33% from the 27 closures a week during 2007, a study by the British Beer and Pub Association said.

The figures were released as a poll by two industry bodies found that almost three quarters of pub licensees say the smoking ban has been bad for trade.

Councils 'fail to net £745m'

Local authorities across Britain have failed to collect more than £745m in council taxes, according to research.

A study of more than 400 councils by the GMB union showed the figure for the past year was slightly down on the previous year's total of £760m.

A spokesman for the GMB said: "This money is urgently needed to provide necessary services, particularly to the elderly and vulnerable."

Call for language overhaul

A leading academic has called for English spelling to be "freed up" to allow people to spell logically.

John Wells, emeritus professor of phonetics at University College London, said irregular spellings are holding children back and should be scrapped.

He suggested there are "more important things than the ability to sort out their, there and they're" and said text message language is the "way forward".

Broadband 'could cost £30bn'

Installing high-speed broadband in every home in the UK could cost almost £30bn, an industry report has said.

The figure comes in a report by the Broadband Stakeholder Group on the costs of fibre-based next generation networks in the UK.

Supplying homes may cost between £5.1bn and £28.8bn depending on the technology used, and deployment costs in rural areas will far exceed those in towns.

Murray reaches US Open final

Tennis ace Andy Murray will serve for a place in British sporting history as he takes on Roger Federer in the final of the US Open in New York.

The 21-year-old Scot held his nerve in a rain-delayed semi-final to beat world No 1 Rafael Nadal 6-2 7-6 4-6 6-4.

But he admitted he will have to "play great" if he is to become the first British man to win a grand slam since Fred Perry won at the US Open in 1936.
