Ricky Ponting (150) and Simon Katich (122) put on 239 before falling along with Mike Hussey in a new-ball flurry inspired by James Anderson (2-80).

But Michael Clarke (83) and Marcus North (54no) put on a further 143 before Stuart Broad removed the former. Brad Haddin joined North and was 4no.

Big morning for Anderson

James Anderson believes England will know by lunch on Saturday if they can win the first Test.

Australia cruised to 479-5 at stumps on the third day to earn a first-innings lead of 44 runs in Cardiff.

The seamer said: "We have got a big session first thing in the morning which will probably decide whether we can win. We will have to work out how to get those wickets pretty quickly."

Clarke eyes Aussie win

Australia vice-captain Michael Clarke is confident the tourists can win the first Ashes Test.

The batsman made 83 to help Australia to 479-5 after three days in Cardiff, already a lead of 44 runs.

Clarke said: "The wicket is fantastic at the moment, we're in a good position. Hopefully the rain will stay away and we can continue batting and put some pressure on England."
