Fernandes joins St Etienne

Manchester City have confirmed Gelson Fernandes has joined St Etienne for an undisclosed fee.

The Swiss midfielder found himself on the fringes last season after manager Mark Hughes arrived from Blackburn.

Fernandes moved to City from FC Sion in July 2007 and made his debut in the Carling Cup win over Bristol City a month later. He made 59 appearances for the Blues, scoring four times.

The Brazilian striker spent the second half of last season with the Toffees after struggling to hold down a place at Eastlands following his £18m transfer from CSKA Moscow.

A statement on the Everton website revealed: "The arrival of Roque Santa Cruz at City convinced Mark Hughes to allow the 22-year-old to leave."

Everton open Naughton talks

Sheffield United have given Everton permission to open talks with defender Kyle Naughton.

The Blades turned down a reported £3.5m offer from Everton last month, but have now agreed to an undisclosed fee for the 20-year-old full-back.

Blades international chairman Terry Robinson said: "We have agreed terms with Everton. It's a good deal for Sheffield United and the player."

Brown admits Campbell defeat

Hull manager Phil Brown has admitted defeat in his attempts to sign Manchester United's Fraizer Campbell.

The Tigers had agreed a club-record fee for the striker, but the England U21 international now looks set to join Sunderland for around £5m.

Brown told the Hull Daily Mail: "I'm disappointed but I was always nervous with how it was dragging on. But I only want players who want to play for us."

Wigan reject Cattermole bid

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez has rejected Sunderland's bid for combative midfielder Lee Cattermole.

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce had lodged a bid to be reunited with the player he originally signed for the Latics in a £3.5m deal from Middlesbrough.

But successor Martinez said: "Lee is not for sale. End of story. He is a fantastic player, a leader on and off the field and is central to our plans."
