As woeful as Queen were first time round, we didn't think this was really their new single when it debuted on Al Murray a while back. Lumpen rawk with hilariously trite lyrics about Big Brother, it's shockingly poor and undoes any remaining shreds of dignity.

AMERICAN MUSIC CLUB All The Lost Souls Welcome You To San Francisco 8/10 Brrr, that's better. Mark Eitzel proves he'll make you forget any horror, even Queen.

MOGWAI Batcat 8/10
Anyone foolish enough to think Mogwai might mellow in their thirties is proved wrong. Up with their scariest attacks, few bands are capable of being so genuinely sinister. Great to hear Roky Erickson on the B-Side too.

F*** BUTTONS Colours Move 7/10
For all their confrontational name and neighbour-bothering bass throb, their power is leavened with uplifting psychedelia and a colourful haze.

LITTLE MAN TATE Hey Little Sweetie 8/10
Few bands get such an undeserved harsh time from critics. Possbily even more direct to the essence of a fine singalong than before, the tale of a wayward student isn't subtle but has Madness-levels of cheek and melody.

PAPERPLAIN 11:30 5/10
Falling the wrong side of twee, teenage singer Helen Page's sincerity isn't in doubt, but such acoustic musings need stronger vocals and less scatty lyrics.

THE ZUTONS What's Your Problem 7/10
Harmonicas, staccato sax, a chorus chant of "Hey!" - they're slowly morphing into Van Morrison. That they're convincing at it is a reminder there's more to them than the cartoon scallies they're painted as. It's not even the strongest song on the new LP.

KEVIN AYERS Baby Come Home 8/10
Gorgeous whimsy with Ayers' feathery vocals maintaining a very English charisma over just-right psychedelia.

CSS Move 6/10
Lyrics about having to keep on moving and staying on the dancefloor could be read as them trying to fight their dayglo perma-happy image. If so, the minimal elastic bass and slightly sketchy vocals work, in so far as it's not that danceable this time round.

THE METROS Talk About It 8/10
Their finest moment, the unstoppable enthusiasm picks up a great classic mod song on the way and scarpers with it.

ROSES KINGS CASTLES Entroubled 8/10
Babyshambles drummer Adam Ficek's debut was cute Jim Noir lo-fi. This is its cockier elder brother, a rollicking seaside romp like Badly Drawn Boy at his ballsiest, similarly underpinned by well-crafted nostalgia. Cracking stuff.

DEPARTMENT OF EAGLES No One Does It Like You 8/10 Five years after the lovely Cold Nose, they're back with a superbly eccentric handclapped waltz. Subtly spooky sighed backing too. Yum.
