And now, for no obvious reason, it's on the Wii.

Ports of old PS2 games are one thing but there seems to be no good explanation for the six-year gap between the original release and now.

Apart from a few new bad guys (although you're still mostly fighting bugs, despite the Greco-Roman setting) this is essentially exactly the same game.

Not even the controls are very different, with surprisingly little in the way of motion controls.

Rygar's main gimmick in battle is his selection of unique diskarmour weapons.

They work like a giant yo-yo, allowing you to flick them out at enemies while also doubling as a handy shield.

They're undoubtedly fun, but the combat doesn't have the depth of God Of War or Devil May Cry and quickly devolves into a mindless button bashing routine. Boss battles are a highlight though, with some still impressively large enemies.

Your deadliest opponent though is often the camera system and the fact that enemies respawn when you exit a room.

This would have seemed like obvious, and relatively easy, flaws to fix, but in the end the only significant addition is a new survival mode.

This has you facing off against an infinite wave of enemies while using completely different, and not terribly satisfying, motion controls.

Despite the new play mode proving so dispensable, and the general air of shameful laziness, we do admit we still had some fun with the game.

The Metroid style accumulation of new weapons, allowing access to previously inaccessible areas, is still as compelling as ever and there's not actually much else like it on the Wii.

Although that's less a compliment of the game, more a criticism of the Wii.

IN SHORT: Low budget, low effort port of what is otherwise one of the PS2's more unfairly forgotten action games.

PROS: The original is a flawed but fun mix of God Of War and Metroid with some clever level design and great bosses.

CONS: No significant changes to the main game and the new Gladiator mode is weak. Shallow combat and poor camera.

SCORE: 5/10 OUT: Now (UK)

</t:full_article><uid>b1a684a982685341a3c9052791c374cb</uid>
Rygar: Battle Of Argus (Wii)

Rygar: The Battle Of Argus

<b>The Bigs 2: Baseball (360)</b>
