Naturally for a game of this era all battles are initiated randomly.

As with Final Fantasy III this has been completely remade in 3D, with new CGI cut scenes and even (badly) spoken dialogue using a new translation.

The most important new gameplay feature is probably the augments – items that confer special abilities and powers, from rare spells to stat modifiers.

There are also whole new lines of sub-quests (the best involving Namingway) and some touchscreen mini-games.

The most controversial change is in the difficultly level, which has actually been ramped up significantly. Or rather it's been reinstated from the original Japanese version.

It still avoids being the mindless grind fest that Final Fantasy III was though so it's not just for fans.

These remakes are finally getting interesting and it'll be fascinating to see just how far they go...

IN SHORT: One of the series' most important entries is given a complete makeover, in the DS's best RPG so far.

PROS: Classic characters and soundtrack. Some excellent graphics for the DS and the augments are welcome.

CONS: The voiceovers are largely awful and the super-deformed art won't please all. A lot harder than you'll remember.

SCORE: 7/10 Out: Now (UK)

</t:full_article><uid>b13c22ccfbbdec81807ed1274c77f6b1</uid>
Final Fantasy IV (DS)

Review by David Jenkins &#8211; Usually when EA get a monopoly they don&#39;t need much encouragement to exploit it to the hilt with sequels and spin-offs.<img src="http://feeds.teletext.co.uk/~r/Entertainment/Games/Reviews-Features/~4/386386404" height="1" width="1"/>
<t:full_article>Review by David Jenkins – Usually when EA get a monopoly they don't need much encouragement to exploit it to the hilt with sequels and spin-offs.

Technically that's what they're doing here, but their refusal to make another Fight Night – despite near universal praise for previous ones – means this is their only boxing game this year.

Except it's hardly got anything to do with boxing (and is barely a game).

Considering EA shut down the studio making Fight Night because it wasn't bringing in enough money we're not sure what they're going to do to those in charge of their new EA Freestyle label.

This is the first major game to be released in its name and, quite frankly, it's a disaster.

It's clearly trying to be the new Ready 2 Rumble but it's further proof that EA don't know anything about beat 'em-ups.

We suspect that the word "wacky" was used rather too much in the corporate boardroom where this game was born.

Since it pays not even lip service to the basics of real boxing it really is just a beat 'em-up with a series of not-quite-outrageous-enough characters.

There's a vague attempt to focus on punching and blocking but kicks and other non-Queensbury moves are just as vital to success.

There's nothing very complicated about what this gets wrong, it's simply appallingly unbalanced.

Even the best beat 'em-ups sometimes have moves which are too powerful but this is filled with unblockable super attacks and moves that leave you stunned and immobile for long seconds.

Since you can't make a gentlemen's agreement with the computer, the single player became an almost pointless slog.

Even playing against a fellow human there's almost no fun to be had that a hundred other fighters couldn't better.

The only real enjoyment comes from creating your own custom characters, which can be made to look exactly like you if you have a webcam handy.

After having endured the game though, the thought of pummelling a realistically modelled version of the designers is the only real appeal.

IN SHORT: Almost laughably amateurish beat 'em-up that's badly balanced and very little fun.

PROS: The GameFace technology that lets you create characters is great as is the deformable faces as they get hit.

CONS: Extremely poorly balanced fighter, that makes a fair match near impossible. Bland character designs.

SCORE: 3/10 Out: Now (UK)

</t:full_article><uid>8aff6fb2e16d58e36a601395b912cd9c</uid>
FaceBreaker (360)
